  • 1.  Policy: re Additional Gift when Accepting Gifts of Living Animals

    Posted 10-03-2023 10:13 AM

For those of you who accept gifts that require additional outlay/expense to maintain once accepted(ie: in our case, horses), do you ask for an additional gift to assist with care/maintenance?  Clearly, as an example, the horses are important for student use, yet the expense to maintain them is significant.

Does anyone have a policy in place governing an additional gift requirement from the donor?

    Thank you!

    Hey there, Tracy.

I cannot help you with this - at least when it comes to accepting gifts of property. It is typically the responsibility of the Gift Acceptance Committee to determine whether taking on the property and associated costs makes sense to the institution. In the case of horses, I must assume you already have facilities for their care and feeding and that you routinely need to add to your "collection" of horses. Meaning there's an existing budget for the ongoing horse program.

You cannot force a donor to make a cash gift for the upkeep, as a gift must be voluntary. You you can ask nicely :-). Or, if you do not need the horses or cannot cover their costs, the GAC can refuse the donation. In sharing the news with the donor, they can voluntarily decide if they want to add cash to the donation to sweeten the deal.

However, I have seen cases in building campaigns where the minimum to name a facility is set and includes both an outright gift and endowment component to cover annual operating costs for the building.

    Hi Tracy…

I have never seen this as a requirement, though development officers will often ask for the additional gift.  As John mentions, I've seen this most often with endowments for building maintenance.
