  • 1.  Payroll Deduction through Benevity

    Posted 09-06-2024 10:43 AM

    Greetings!

We have a donor with an open pledge.  He is paying the pledge through a monthly payroll deduction from his employer.  The employer uses Benevity to transfer the gift along with their match.  Since, this is not a true DAF scenario and Benevity is only the 3rd party transmitter, I feel like we are okay to apply these payments to his pledge.  Would you agree?

    Thanks for your help!

Nope. You can't do that. This is a "true" DAF scenario. The donor and the match are being made to Benevity's DAF - the American Online Giving Foundation. The money you will receive is from that DAF and cannot be applied to a personal pledge - and you can never apply a matching gift to a personal pledge, either.

You must remove the pledge from the donor's record and deal with soft credits only for recognition. Don't forget that you will not receive the full amount the employee has deducted. American Online takes their fee out of "your" money.

PS - Don't forget that American Online/Benevity is responsible for issuing receipts. You cannot. However, you can send a thank you letter for stewardship purposes.
