  • 1.  Naming Recognition Best Practices for Pledged Gifts

    Posted 30 days ago

I wanted to ask for guidance and make sure we are aligned with advancement best practices related to donor recognition.

We currently have a lead donor who has pledged $1M but has not yet made a payment toward that commitment and is requesting that a plaque be installed in his name. There is some internal pressure to move forward with the recognition, and before doing so, we would like to be grounded in established best practices or CASE standards that we can reference to help guide leadership's decision-making.

As we think through next steps, I'm hoping to better understand what is considered standard practice when it comes to recognition for pledged gifts versus fulfilled commitments. Specifically, is permanent recognition (such as plaques or naming signage) typically tied to funds received, a fulfilled commitment, or is it common to proceed based on a pledge alone?

    Thank you!

    Tammy

I have found that best practices vary somewhat when it comes to installing a plaque versus naming a building or facility. For the latter, it's rare for any name to go up without at least 50% of the commitment paid.

That same general rule seems to work well for all name recognitions - we won't spend money on anything until you have shown good faith by making a payment. However, there are always exceptions, and if you feel this one is one of those, I'd let your naming committee make the determination.

However, I would not install a permanent plaque. You can have something nice prepared at the local award shop for a nominal cost. I wouldn't make a permanent installation until the donor satisfies the minimum donation policy.

Thank you, John! Mocking up something that's not permanent was my supervisors suggestion.
