  • 1.  Matching Gifts and Joint Giving

    Posted 14 days ago

    Hi!

Our best practices for Matching Gifts is to assign Hard credit to the Employer and Soft credit to the employee. We don't assign Soft credit on the matching gift to spouses of the employee since they are not an employee and therefore not part of the matching gift process.

I'm reading this is the usual process for most organizations. However, are there concerns with Joint spousal giving not being equal? How do other organizations handle matching gift soft credits and reporting out on joint giving?

    Thank you!

Back in the olden days when the Matching Gifts Symposium existed and we published a series of matching gift best practices books, we advocated FOR giving spouses equal matching gift credit. One of the rationales was that many employers offer matching donations for employees' spouses. The reality is that when a gift comes from a married individual, it is essentially a gift from both (joint ownership), unless directed otherwise.

Giving joint soft credit also eliminates the need for some donors telling you to "split" the legal gift so that both spouses get equal credit.

I am traveling in the UK but will see if I can find the aasp soft credit best practices document from several years ago and see if it addressed this topic.

The answer is yes - the best practice document suggested the both spouses/legal partners should receive 100% soft credit for all third-party gifts including these, DAFs, and private foundations. Again, that is not true if the gift initiator directs you to exclude the spouse.

Thank you so much for the quick reply, John. This is helpful for us to analyze how to move forward with assigning Soft credits on matching gifts.

    Safe Travels!
