Has anyone worked with Assets International or any other contingency-based firm that deals with lost or unclaimed assets?  Interested in hearing your experiences. Thanks.

I absolutely refuse. Even when the firm reaches out and tells me they have already "found" money that belongs to us.

I don't know this company, but when I worked in a small nonprofit, we took a flutter on one of these types of offers. Of course the "finder" took a big chunk of the money, but we did receive funds that we would not have had otherwise. I suppose it depends on how badly you are looking for income. In our situation, we welcomed all comers.

And I have known other organizations like your nonprofit, Susan, that have done likewise. It's hard to turn down free money when you need cash!

But some organizations refuse to pay any sort of "finders fee." We (at Duke) took the AFP Code of Ethics literally: "24. Decline receiving or paying finder's fees, commissions, or compensation based on a percentage of funds raised."

Some feel that this statement only applies to employees of the institution. However, we looked at the rationale more broadly and I have held that attitude for many decades now.
