  • 1.  IRA Check with No Donor Information

    Posted 11-28-2022 12:33 PM
Has anyone received an IRA check from Fidelity with no donor information? We received one recently and we are trying to find the best way to obtain the donor information. We called but, not surprisingly, could not get any information. Our next thought is to mail it back and ask them to include the donor information. Has anyone encountered this before?

    Thanks,
    Colleen

Before returning the check, can you search your contact reports to see if an MGO indicated a distribution of that amount was coming?

In all of my years, I have not seen a "blank check" from Fidelity.  This information is usually found on the check stub/tear-off.  By any chance, did this check first go to another office that might have been overzealous in throwing that check advice slip away?

From time to time we receive checks from a company like Fidelity which is a normal distribution, but doesn't state the individual's name.  We will then call the institution to inquire of the donor's name; often, we have been told that if the donor had authorized release of their name, that information would have been included in the check, and if it isn't, that they can't release the name of the person to us. In those situations, we have recorded the gift to our Anonymous Donor record and deposited the check.  Many times, often weeks or months later, the donor will call us out of the blue (often when they've gotten a new solicitation) to say they made their gift to us via IRA, and we're able to track their gift down, and assign it to the rightful donor.  If not, the gift remains receipted to the anonymous record.

Yes, Gwen.  This happens here at MSK as well and we handle the same way.

Every time we (by we I mean me lol) call Fidelity for this information, they are adamant that they won't release donor information and that the donor would need to be on a 3-way call to verbally give authorization.  As that is not possible, since there is no donor information, we have to record the payment to our anonymous record.

    Such a wonderfully helpful system

I recall getting Fidelity Brokerage checks (the green ones) without donor information frequently with a previous job. I believe this was often a result of a third party investment firm forgetting to include donor information in the proper format OR the donor truly wishing to be anonymous.

calling can sometimes work, but like others have said, they may not offer information (depends on who you get on the phone) or they may not even know who the donor is as they were just a check clearing house (but they could tell you the investment firm perhaps).

    Colleen,

I have had success in calling Fidelity and asking for the name/number of the Advisor who requested the disbursement. I've only had this happen a couple of times, but I called the Advisor and explained and found out who the donor was.

    Best of luck!
