  • 1.  Incentives for employees or general public

I don't think this is possible but I figured I would ask. We have a Peer-2-Peer event (donation only, no registration) for the holidays. A staff member came to me asking if they could provide an incentive like tickets to a couple different venues around town if the donor fundraises a certain dollar amount? Is this allowable or should there be some way of recouping the benefit of the ticket?  Or should the total amount fundraised be high enough for the ticket value to be a small percentage of the value of the donation? I wasn't too sure how this would work since it isn't really the donor's money, but how much they are able to raise.

AFP's Code of Ethics prohibits any form of incentive or "bonus" based on fundraising performance.

The other issue here is that the "donor" is soliciting contributions from others. Therefore, how much money they bring in to "earn" an incentive is not a quid pro quo event (unless it is their money).

I would avoid any sort of incentive for ethical reasons. However, you can certainly recognize individuals for their fundraising successes.

Fundraising incentives in a P2P context are not comparable to fundraising incentives for professional fundraisers. The AFP's stance applies only to professional fundraisers and is not relevant here. If anything, incentives are a common, and perhaps even a best practice in P2P fundraising. This is far more comparable to providing free swag to volunteers than it is to commission-based payments to professionals. There is nothing untoward about these incentives.

    I respectfully disagree.

Regardless of your "official" fundraising capacity, these ethical standards should be considered. I have served on numerous nonprofit Boards that have adopted similar ethical standards for their board members and volunteers.

SWAG and recognition are one thing - compensation or tangible benefits based on fundraising performance are another (in my opinion).
