  • 1.  Honorarium Type Gifts

We have situation somewhat similar to an honorarium. A publishing company would like to make a donation to us in lieu of a stipend for editorial work done by our faculty member. The faculty member would like the donation to be designated to expenses for medical students in their department.

We are being told by our compliance dept that
the payment should be made directly to the faculty member, who can then personally choose to donate the funds back to the our foundation.

Does anyone have policy on how honorarium type gifts should be handled? In regards to designation, can these type of gifts be directed by the faculty member who completed the work?

    Thank you,

Payments of this nature can either be from the individual or the publisher. It depends on how the publisher constructs the gift.

If the publisher tells you they are issuing a 1099 to the individual for the monies earned, you can record the gift on the individual's record as the publisher is serving as their agent.

However, it is just as common for the individual to refuse the income and suggest a contribution be made instead. In that case, it is a gift from the publisher.

You should contact the publisher to determine how this is being handled.
