  • 1.  Golf tournament fundraiser payment to country club

We received a call from an alumnus who wants to buy a foursome for our annual golf tournament, but wants to pay the country club directly so he can get reimbursed from his work.

We have been trying to figure out how this can be done and the only scenario we can come up with is have him pay the country club and ask them to credit our account to reduce the amount we would have to pay to hold the event. If he then gave us a receipt we could give him gift-in-kind credit? This is a net proceeds event where we pay all the bills first and if any money is leftover it goes to a scholarship.

Somehow this isn't sounding very clean to me, but there are greater minds than mine in this community (and thank you all because I always learn so much!!).

This doesn't quite add up, and you're right to be nonplussed. This isn't a gift. If he wants to give a gift, he should do so. If his employer is giving the gift, they should do so. But this whole reimbursement scheme seems to be a way for him to claim a tax deduction without being out the contribution dollars... and that's not how charitable intent works.

There is no gift here. The donor already told you they are doing this to get reimbursed (I would love to work for their company!). Giving them any sort of receipt would be a form of double-dipping. Furthermore, you already stated this was a proceeds-to-benefit event, so no other donors are getting a receipt, and neither should this person.
