  • 1.  Gift received from Spay, Inc. dba Stack Sports - third-party event

    Hello,

We had an individual host a third-party event (run/walk) with all proceeds benefitting our organization. They used Spay, Inc. dba Stack Sports (GetMeRegistered.com) for registrations for their event and provided our name and address for Spay, Inc. to mail the check for registration fees collected. Do we need to issue a receipt or acknowledgement to Spay, Inc. for this gift? It seems more transactional or pass-through so we're not sure who gets credit in this scenario. We are counting it as a gift from a third-party fundraising event but we aren't sure what the receipting/acknowledging requirements are in this scenario.

    Thank you!

    Erica

You will need to review the contract you executed with the company. But I doubt they are handling receipting and such with the participants. Even so, the volume and small dollar size of payments might suggest treating the revenue as a "proceeds to benefit" activity. As such, a lump-sum payment is entered on a "various donors" record and no one receives a tax receipt.
