  • 1.  Gift Processing and Prospect Research

    Posted 05-18-2022 07:33 AM

Hi – we are considering merging two positions into one – Gift Processing and Prospect Research. We are a small development office and neither job has enough work for a full-time position, but together we can justify a full-time person. Any thoughts on putting the two areas together?

No issues for me. If you already have a prospect researcher I have a gut feeling that it would be better to add gift processing work to the researchers job description than it would be to add research work to the gift processor's job description.

I might think about if there is another position you could combine with gift processing rather than research. But I'm sure you already considered that.

Depends on your org chart, but as a general rule, it's best to separate operations work like gift processing, from project work like prospect research. Project work imposes urgency and priority that tends to displace operations work, and it can be challenging to load-balance between the two. That said, you may not have a better option.

I agree with Mr. Shalev.  My job description currently includes both prospect research and a portion of the gift processing duties.  At King to address a similar issue, we split the gift processing process into 3 steps and coordinate them between two different positions.  This arrangement allows us to have a check and balance review process with each gift batch.  We check each person's work as it moves through the process.  I handle all of the prospect research for the department.  The nature of research does impede on the regular requirements that are needed for gift processing.  Another option that might work would be to combine gift processing with record updates and management.  That would be another area that could allow for synergy.  Just a few thoughts.
