  • 1.  Gift In-Kind - Freight

    Posted 04-07-2025 03:49 PM

    Hello,

We are working on receiving a gift in-kind. There is discussion about whether freight costs are countable. I don't believe they are. My administration thinks there is an exception via CASE that allows this cost to be countable if the item is highly developed/customized for the institution.

Does anyone have any insight to this?

    Thank you,
    Leticia

CASE does not have such an exception for "freight."

There is an exception along those lines for software that is developed exclusively for your and rights transferred to you.

FWIW, I found the reference to what your administration referred to in the CASE Standards. As I had recalled, it is found in paragraph 3.3.2 - Software and Hardware.

In this section, CASE emphasizes that software gifts are not countable. However, the Standards go on to say, "The only exception to this rule is when software is highly developed or customized for the institution."

Nowhere in the Standards - in this section or elsewhere - does CASE discuss an exception for freight costs.
