  • 1.  Gift Designation Change

    Posted 17 hours ago

How does your organization handle gift designation requests from development officers?

    Specifically:

    • If a gift has a clear donor designation, will you ever change it based on a development officer's request?
    • If a gift has no clear designation, do you accept the development officer's direction, require donor documentation or confirmation, or default the gift to an undesignated fund?

    Thank you!

The funds belong to the donor, not the DO. Only the donor can change or specify a designation. If donors send you random gifts without indicating a designation, they should be asked. If they do not specify, the organization should have a policy for crediting undesignated gifts. Often, that policy dictates a specific fund or an annual determination for "where the need is greatest" gifts.

So essentially the DO would need to provide written documentation for any changes. Thank you!

Well, not always. The donor could approach you directly without going through the DO. And, often, there is a policy for undesignated gifts, such as realized bequests, that don't need a DO's involvement.

But generally, yes. You should require written confirmation (or an email) from the original donor to substantiate a change.
