  • 1.  Fraternity Anniversary Dinner

We are supporting an on-campus dinner celebrating the anniversary of one of the fraternities on campus. The dinner is supposed to pay for itself, food and drink costs are being covered by the price of attending the event. Some of the alumni fraternity members would like to make contributions to underwrite the cost of the event and reduce the ticket price for more recently graduated fraternity brothers and current student fraternity members. While we are fine with them doing this, we do not believe that this support should be considered gifts to the university and acknowledged as such. Does anyone think this should be considered gifts to the university?

    Good morning, Joe -

Not sure I could comfortably suggest a definite answer to this with those details. What I might recommend is considering a few questions to discuss with your internal partners.

Is there some way this event supports the mission of the organization in a manner that merits current and future appeals for genuine philanthropic support?

When you say that you are "supporting" this event, does that mean the Advancement division is providing the revenue for the event as a stewardship or fundraising endeavor?

No matter the answers to the above questions, are you willing to set a precedence here to do this for any and all future anniversary events proposed by fraternal organizations? Particularly if this fraternity falls into the category of "social club" vs. "honorary society"?

Just a few thoughts for consideration.

    Good luck and best regards,

    Amy
