A follow up on this ... I think I know the answer but always appreciate the confirmation. We just held an event at a private club in Manhattan where a trustee is a member. The trustee paid for the event (to the tune of $7,000+) and I've just been asked to issue a gift in kind receipt.
Is this an instance where the college should pay the bill and the trustee should then make the cash donation to the college instead?
Not sure if the bill has already been paid. If it has, should we reimburse the trustee and then ask him to then donate the reimbursement back to us?
Thanks,
Kim

It's not a gift, given the limited number of individuals who are benefitting.
Suggest that the individual make an unrestricted donation to the annual fund. If this sort of event is something Year Up conducts all the time you can pay for it out of your budget.

Subject: Executive Lunch
Hello,
A donor is offering to take a group of our program participants and one staff member to lunch as an executive lunch and learn type event. Is this considered a gift in kind? Should he pay and we issue him a receipt with a description of the event, or should we pay and he makes a donation that covers the cost?
