    Hi Colleagues,

I searched the archives but didn't find the answer to my question. We are having a breakfast event that is not a fundraiser. The cost covers the attendance.

We have an individual who is not attending the event who gave to cover eight students' attendance. There is another individual who is attending the event who paid for their attendance as well as eight students' attendance. Is paying for others to go considered a gift?

    Thank you,

Neither example reflects a gift. See IRS Publication 526. Not only are these individuals paying for specific individuals, but they are buying something of equal value for distribution to others.

On the other hand, if you had a general fund people could donate to that covers the costs of a mission-related activity for the university to spend in any manner that fulfills that mission, those would be considered gifts.
