  • 1.  Estate Gifts -- receipt/acknowledgment?

    Posted 06-16-2025 11:26 AM

    Hello everyone,

I am reviewing our process for accepting an estate gift.  What is the best procedure for receipting or acknoweldeging?  Is a receipt necessary?  If so, who do you direct it to, the Trust but attention to the attorney?  We often times do not have the contact information for the successor co-trustees.  Do you forgo a formal acknowledgment letter?

    Thank you all!

    Molly

Yes, a receipt is necessary for tax purposes.

A common approach is to create an alias name for the donor along the lines of Estate of [deceased name]. If you know the name and address of the executor or trustee, you can add that as a new address. The receipt can then go to that Estate of name, ICO the name of the Executor, and their address.
