One of our donors purchased an event listing in a relevant publication on our behalf. He would like an acknowledgement from us for tax documentation. He provided an invoice and a copy of the publication for documentation purposes. GIK or not?

Since he is not providing the space, but giving you his full interest in the space, a GIK can be acknowledged. However, no mention of a dollar value can be on the receipt. Only the name of the publication, the size of the space, and probably a mention of whether it was a full color or B/W copy.
