  • 1.  Donations of cloud credits

    Posted 25 days ago

    Good afternoon,

We are seeing an increase in agreements that include "cloud credits". For example, we recently received an agreement that included $70K in cash and $20K in cloud credits. I have always been under the impression that the cloud credits or compute portion can't be counted in our fundraising totals and are not considered GIKs because they can only be used on the platform of the company giving the credits.  I'm getting pushback to re-visit this from our Corporate and Foundations area which are seeing more and more agreements that include this. Has anything changed in this realm?  Am I incorrect.in assuming these don't qualify as a charitable donation?

Would value your thoughts and feedback if other universities are seeing more of these types of agreements.

You are correct. Those credits are essentially the use of something without ownership. This is extremely similar to the olden days of software licenses and "free" seats. The only difference now is that the use is in the cloud rather than on your mainframe :-).
