  • 1.  donation of gas cards

    We have an Autism Program on campus, managed under the Psychology Department. 

     

    The program director has said that they have families that need help with transportation to their services and the Autism Program would like to be able to support them by providing those families with gas gift cards. 

     

    We have told them they cannot use Foundation Funds to purchase gas cards.  The program director instead now wants to solicit gas cards from donors.

     

    Can these be counted as a GIK to the Foundation?

    Generally speaking, such a donation might qualify as a deductible donation if it fell under the program's mission.

    However, in keeping with IRS regulations, the pool of candidates who are eligible to receive the cards would need to be extremely broad.  Meaning, that if there are only a couple of families these would be solicited for, you might have an issue.

    Your best bet is to have a chat with Counsel.
