  • 1.  Corporate Sponsorships For Student Groups

Our student groups often seek corporate sponsorship for their events or programs on campus, and we are looking to standardize the student group sponsorship package and process. Anyone have language, systems and/or processes they could share?

Most student groups are not eligible to receive tax-deductible gifts. So, you may want to refrain from encouraging those cultivation efforts. They could impact your ability to secure a deductible sponsorship for a later institutional event.

At the very least, you'll want to establish a third-party fundraising policy that requires any planned solicitation effort outside Advancement to coordinate with your office. In that way, you can collaborate with the group to create event-specific marketing material that discloses the non-deductibility of the payments.

    John,

I know you have mentioned this before. What determines if a student group is or is not eligible? When I broached the subject with a couple staff members I was told they can/we can for them.

We do have a staff member who works with student orgs and policies and procedures in place.

The group must serve educational purposes. Another way to consider it is whether it is a "social" club.

I've attached a document prepared from older IRS sections - and screenshots - that provided these definitions.

    Thank you, John.

I think we are going to have an interesting discussion in our office. :)
