  • 1.  Constituents work addresses

    Good morning,

     

    How many of you store work addresses for your constituents? We have surveyed our clients (Alumni, Prospect Research, etc) and no one uses a work address for anyone, but they do like to know the area (Boston, Chicago, etc). Excluding those constituents who want their mail to go to their work addresses (very few and tend to be lawyers, or high profile prospects) does anyone see a benefit in storing this information?

    It is difficult to distinguish between employment information and a "work address." You may not need to "write" someone at their place of business, but you definitely may want to call or email them there. We found that was the best place to contact our major gift prospects during our campaign.

    It is also very useful to know who the employer is and whether you have multiple constituents physically located at the same location. Not only does that information facilitate matching gift programs and help with wealth indicators, but knowing you have two donors/prospects in the same building can make visit scheduling easier.

    I see more harm in not collecting and storing this information than in retaining it. I advocate for periodic employment appends to refresh this information. You can argue that you do not need to track the physical mailing address. However, you cannot convince me not to store everything else, including the city. And if you will continue to maintain all of that employment information, why not update the address? It comes with the rest when you do an append!
