  • 1.  Charitable Receipt for donated royalties?

    Posted 7 hours ago

    Greetings!

we have a faculty member that wishes to donate the royalties from the sale of her textbook (but not sold to her students where she works) but she had the publisher make the check payable to our college, rather than herself.  She is asking me for a charitable receipt to show that she donated her royalties to us.  Since technically the check was from the publisher and not her, can I issue a tax receipt to her? Would we need something from the publisher indicating this was the intended purpose? Thanks in advance :)

Yes, you can, provided the publisher is treating the payment as income to the donor. In that case, the publisher is serving as the author's agent.

However, if the author has waived all royalty rights, then this cannot be regarded as a charitable contribution. You must first "earn" the income to then give it away.

My guess is that the first line above is what's happening. Just give the publisher a quick call.
