Happy EOY to all my AASP folks!

In preparation for processing EOY gifts, I am checking to see if anyone has discussed how their teams will be handling donations that come in dated for December. It seems the USPS is changing its practice around postmarks, effective next week. The long and short of it seems to be that machine postmarks will now be applied at regional processing centers, not the local drop-off point. As a result, the date of the machine postmark can be several days later than when a piece of mail was handed over to the USPS.

This means a person could deliver a piece of mail to their local post office on 12/31, but it wouldn't get postmarked until it reaches the regional processing center. If a person wants to ensure that 12/31 is noted as the date of mailing, he/she would need to go inside their local post office to ask for a manual/local postmark or purchase postage with a label verifying the date of mailing.

Typically we use postmarks to see if gifts should be counted in December/Jan but if the USPS is changing its practices this might impact our current procedure.  Has anyone discussed this?

     Thank you!

The postmark really hasn't ever been a reliable indicator - and we've never been required to provide that date anyway.

Perhaps you not seen the attached annual "Date of Gift" summary I send. This version went out a few weeks ago. It should address your concerns.
