  • 1.  Bequest Recording Date

    Good afternoon,  I'm hoping someone can tell me how they handle the following situation.  When recording a new Bequest that is permanently restricted to a named endowment should I use the date the Notice of Bequest was signed by the donor OR the date that the donor signed the Memorandum of Agreement for the endowment?  I'm leaning toward the NoB date since it is the date the Bequest is actually committed.

    I would actually put the bequest on your books with today's date for accurate reporting. Backdating anything tends to mess up reports, and if it's really old, it may result in many people not seeing it.

    I would add the date the will was executed on the comment line. That's the legal date for all practical purposes. The date you were notified is irrelevant unless that happens to be the same day as when you recorded it.
