  • 1.  Appeals and fiscal years

    Good afternoon everyone,

I had a question posed that I truly don't know the correct answer to. I've been doing it one way, but I'm not sure if that's correct. The scenario is if a gift is received in this fiscal from an appeal done last fiscal, which appeal do I use? Example... two weeks after I close the fiscal, I receive a gift from an event that happened the last month of my fiscal year. Do I use that appeal or do I use the appeal from the current fiscal year even though the gift clearly came in because of last fiscals efforts?

    I welcome your thoughts!

    Liz

It is customary to use the appeal code associated with the event or the appeal. Even if you have entered a new business year, the donor gave in response to the prior activity. To arbitrarily assign a new year appeal will serve to inflate the success numbers for this year to the detriment of the prior year.

You can still include the payment in the current year's fundraising totals, but I'd give credit to the appeal that secured the funds.
