  • 1.  3rd-party donation gift entry in RE and acknowledgement

    Hi!

    One of the entities of our University went 'rogue' and is receiving donations via a 3rd-party website (see below). My questions/concerns are:

    1)  Only 80% of the donation is being received due to the 3rd-party fees. Do I track the full gift amount in Raiser's Edge to give credit to the donor for their intended gift amount? Or do I have to just enter the actual amount received?

    2)  Do I have to 'hard credit' eTeamSponsor, Inc. and 'soft credit' the donor or can I just 'hard credit' the donor?

    3)  It appears based on the info below the donors are receiving a 'Thank You' after making their gift but I'm not certain it's a 'tax receipt'. I still shouldn't be issuing a tax receipt on behalf of my organization, correct?

    ff, you need to see if the rogue unit signed a contract (probably improperly) authorizing the vendor to serve as your fiscal agent.  If, heaven forbid, they did then the donors should be receipted for the full amount they paid.

    You also need to find out whether they are operating like a DAF (similar to Benevity) to determine whether a legal receipt has already been issued.

    Without knowing the answers to these questions it's not immediately clear who gets hard credit, how much hard credit is given, who is sending the receipt, and the amount that needs to go on that receipt.

    And when you are done, create a third-party fundraising policy that prohibits things like this from happening in the future!
