  • 1.  Recording a CGA in Raiser's Edge

    Posted 10-04-2021 07:34 AM
I am interested in learning about how other institutions, that use Raiser's Edge, handle recording the different components of a CGA. Specifically, we are looking into what to do with the original funds used to create the CGA. Should we record that in Raiser's Edge or should that be a function handled outside of RE. We do have the planned gift module and will be creating a PG to record the CGA and anticipate recording the funds that are ultimately received when the gift is realized at completion. But, there is question about what to do with the original funds. Any insight you can provide is appreciated.

    Thank you,

    Jeremy

Hi Jeremy, what did you decide to do? We have our fist CGA in a very long time, and the first time we are recording it in RE. I'd love to learn more about your process!

    Thanks!

You add the original funds given as the planned gift; the variances are recorded as NPV and Remainder value, which is what you expect to receive when all is said and done. Further, when you select the charitable annuity as the giving vehicle option then the Planned Gift tab opens new values that are appropriate to managing gift annuities.

$250,000 is the 'original' gift given. Receipt amount is the charitable deduction for the donor. Each FY we update the Remainder and NPV Values.

Thanks--this was very helpful. As a follow up question, what is the amount of the credit given to the gift officer? Also, what amount is shared with finance/recorded on the general ledger and counted in fundraising totals? Are you using the gift amount or the charitable deduction amount?

    Thanks!

Your CAO will develop MGO metrics based on their preferences. I have seen planned gifts assigned using both values. The trend is toward the face value, mostly because it is the larger amount . However, as long as a value is used consistently, either is appropriate.

As for what finance books, that is up to them. I typically see planned gifts excluded from GL feeds so they can create independent entries. It becomes complicated when the assets are not managed by the organization but, instead, by another foundation or financial institution. Since the volume of planned gifts is typically not large, letting finance do its own thing is often the safest approach.
