Thank you, Rebecca. I appreciate the viewpoint of someone who has worked with a few of the options that we may be considering.
I’m also starting to think in terms of ways to incentivize alumni to provide their employment information – maybe get them to supply this info on a survey to win something.
Thanks again to everyone for the helpful feedback!

In the past five years we have increased our employer data percentages from 15,000 alumni employment records to nearly 85,000 records.
I echo John's recommendation of HEP data services. They have been the most cost-effective and accurate for us. And as a bonus they come with matching gift policy info 🙂
We have also used AlumniSync and LiveAlumni with some success. The benefits of those vendors are if you provide them a list of org records from your database they will append matches to that list so you can load the results without having to do a lot of manual work.
The down side of LiveAlumni for us and LinkedIn is that due to us being part of the Maryland system and having our name start with University of Maryland, we got a lot of results for alumni that aren't actually ours, but other institutions in our system. Additionally, we have a high percentage of former students due to being a global non-traditional online institution, and if a student listed us on their education in LinkedIn even if they never graduated, those results would pull in our employer append.
We are looking into the Navigator from LinkedIn and would be interested to know if the same challenges we had from LiveAlumni are presented there also.
We present our alumni with opportunities and encouragement to update their employer information at every opportunity. We put it in our newsletter and link it to our online portal so they can update it with one click, we always include it on our event registrations, and donation giving site (not mandatory of course, but optional). And we have resources in-house dedicated to researching and entering employer data for our alumni on a regular basis via LinkedIn and other online resources.
Hope that helps,

Paula et al,
We’ve used them and been mildly happy. There are things to note though:
1. They only give you results for people who don’t have a private profile. If they have a private profile, you won’t get their data.
2. If you have, for example, 6 Michael Jones’ in your system, they will give you 6 possible ID’s….and again, only the ID’s of people that don’t have private profiles. So there’s a chance that none of the 6 ID’s they give you are the correct Michael Jones.
3. The data they give you is going to be a couple months old right away since it takes them time to do their matching after you submit your information to them.
4. You will need to note the difference between Primary and Current to use that in analyzing what you currently have on file for the alumni.
5. Lastly, if you use LiveAlumni for their Hello Contact data, be aware that the business address they return is for the company headquarters and the business email they return, if not provided on the alumni’s profile, will be a guess based on the format for that company’s email addresses.
I hope this helps. As with any service, it can never be perfect.

Have you checked into HEPData and their suite of EmployerFind services?

Good morning,
I’m wondering what other educational institutions are doing to find employment information on their alumni. We no longer do an alumni directory book since everything is now on our online alumni directory. However, this doesn’t seem to be yielding the results we were expecting/hoping for.
Are there recommended pay-sites that others have found successful in obtaining business information on their alumni constituents. I’d love to get responses from anyone who has encountered this challenge and to hear what sources are available to help fill the gaps in collecting this type of data.
Many thanks!
