Why can’t these same donors make cash gifts to you to obtain the credits? I am troubled by the vendor working with the donors - not you working with the donors. Do you even have a relationship with these philanthropists? If this goes forward I would want to see proof of payment before issuing a receipt. But from a distance, this feels murky. The main question I have is whether they are receiving any benefits from the purchase. It doesn't feel like an arms-length transaction, it feels like they're trying to leverage greater use of the platform through their philanthropic efforts. I'd ask more questions. Just want to gut check my feeling that the following could be treated as a true gift in kind: We have purchased services with ExactAsk that allows us to insert recommended ask amounts they generate that we use in our direct mail acquisition appeals, and apparently it has worked well. Apparently there are some philanthropists that ExactAsk are working with (that our department has vetted) who would like to purchase a not-insignificant amount of ExactAsk credits for us to use in our various FY20 solicitations, and would want a GIK receipt. While this is not tangible property, it seems to be a legitimate donation of a non-tangible good that we could receipt, of course without listing any value. Does this seem correct to others? Appreciate the feedback. Our Development lead has a meeting scheduled with the potential donors and will be developing a direct relationship with them. I'll share these thoughts with her so she can make sure she covers these concerns as she determines if this relationship and GIK is appropriate.
