Brainstorm: Stage between "Solicitation Research" and "Ask Made"

  • 1.  Brainstorm: Stage between "Solicitation Research" and "Ask Made"

    Posted 08-21-2019 01:23 PM
Hello Everyone! Please help me brainstorm this one. Mid-week has sapped my inspiration. We use Salesforce. Our asks and potential asks are tracked in "Opportunities." Each Opportunity has a stage indicating how far along it is. The team thinks it would be useful to have something between Solicitation Research and Ask made, awaiting reply. It would be for those times where they aren't researching anything and have an ask ready, but the time isn't right. For instance, their donor always gives in November. We want to stay away from "Cultivation." With their Opportunities sitting in Solicitation Research on our reports, it looks like they haven't done any work on them, which isn't always true. So, they want an in-between stage. What would you call it? Any ideas? Thanks in advance!--Bill

I think the issue you have is that your stages aren't defined along the same axis of meaning. In other words, 'Solicitation Research' is the name of stage the defines a variety of tasks that are relevant to a qualified record. On the other hand, 'Ask Made' is the completion of a specific task. It isn't a container for tasks, it isn't a stage of work, it's a milestone, a marker that an action that the org values has been achieved. I think what you're missing is a status, not a stage. A donor who is temporarily not solicitable should be assigned a Hold status. Donors might be in the solicitation phase of the Opportunities funnel, but not active for solicitation for some factor -- and this is the key point -- that is EXTERNAL to your work. It's not that you need to do something to push them ahead, it's that you need to wait for the opportunity to mature. Thank you, Isaac Shalev CRM Expert Sage70, Inc. Hi Marianne, Not the prospect, but the Opportunity. A prospect many have many Opportunities attached to her in varying stages. An Opportunity is something like: 2019 Baseball Team Uniforms DONORS NAME So, in Solicitation Research, the gift officer is researching to see if this is actually a fit for the donor and how much they should ask for. Ask made... is after they've asked. Once the gift officer has decided the ask would be proper and decides how much to ask for, Solicitation research is over, but it's not the right time to ask, for whatever reason. What would you call that?--Bill

We use the below for our indicators in Sales Force. The final two are closed lost or closed won. Are you talking about a prospect in solicitation? Or under assignment? Is this for annual giving? My favorite 5 stages are: 1. In Research 2. Assigned 3. In Cultivation 4. In Solicitation 5. Complete (either gift or refusal, etc.) If I'm off base of your topic, please feel free to ignore.... --Marianne ________________________________________ Marianne M. Hi, Bill, If you don’t like "In Cultivation" for this prospect, how about "Under Project Qualification" or "In Strategic Planning"? That's all my mid-week brain can dig up. Hope it helps stir your thinking. --Marianne ________________________________________ Marianne M. Pelletier Staupell Analytics Group 607-592-3797 marianne@staupell.com http://www.staupell.com

Hi Bill and Marianne! This one made me go down a thesaurus rabbit hole: Pre-Ask Abeyance, Interstice, Hiatus, Period, or Quiescence Pre-Ask Prelude or Preface Solicitation Postponement Pre-Solicitation Interim or Interlude Solicitation Deferral Hope that sparks inspiration for something useable! LOL! "Quiescence Pre-Ask Prelude" sounds like something that I did at a lot of high school dances! --Marianne ________________________________________ Marianne M. Pelletier Staupell Analytics Group 607-592-3797 marianne@staupell.com http://www.staupell.com

We keep it simple and follow the opportunity stages of: Discovery, Qualification, Cultivation, Solicitation, Closed Won/Closed Lost. In the opportunity details we outline the estimated ask details and the actual details. It is the fundraisers responsibility to meet the recommended criteria before moving them from cultivation to solicitation and then from solicitation to won or lost. You could have a status field on the opportunity for where in the stage you are. For example, if they are in solicitation stage, the status could be ask made, or solicitation in review, or negotiations pending, etc. And with a status date you could track how long it has been in that status, without needing to mess with your stages altogether. Hi Bill, We use "intend to solicit" as that interim level between cultivation and ask made. I've also seen something like "pre-solicitation", but that might be close to your current "solicitation research" category.
