There's not a simple answer to this question, as it depends a great deal on what information alumni have given you, and under what grant of permission. Certainly, there's nothing wrong with you reaching out to alumni regarding a reunion, presuming you've opted in those email addresses properly. The real issue with giving emails to an alum to organize the event is that it is unlikely to be GDPR-compliant in terms of how the alum stores the information and whether they'll expunge it. You'd need an agreement with the alum, at the very least, before you could give them personally identifiable information like email addresses. Of course, long before GDPR, universities have been unhappy about sharing email lists precisely because alumni don't treat those emails well. Technically, btw, your GDPR concerns extend to any EU citizen, regardless of their current location, and possibly to anyone currently in an EU state regardless of their citizenship status. GDPR applies VERY broadly, though its enforceability remains largely untested. Thank you, Isaac Shalev CRM Expert Sage70, Inc. Hello, We have a GDPR-related issue and would like to see if any other schools have experienced something similar. The University of Montana has 76 alumni whose last known address is in France. One of those alums would like to organize an alumni gathering in France and would like to communicate with the other 75. Given the GDPR regulations, the Alumni Association isn't sure how to respond to the request. Has anyone else had a similar situation and if so how did you handle it? Thank you for your help!
