As an analytics consultant, I’ve seen just about all the scenarios described here. We are currently focused on one client since it’s a large, comprehensive contract, but there’s also something really appealing to an organization having someone in house to run constant tests and answer a while just if questions.
I think the broader question is whether data driven strategy is welcome in an organization or it’s new. If it’s new, there’s frankly less risk to bringing in a consultant who will not cost training or off-boarding costs if the organization isn’t ready or just wants to experiment.

Yes, if you are looking for someone to use tools like Tableau, getting a person who meets the other criteria and training them will work.

I would also add that finding someone who is capable rather than directly qualified might be of interest. Some data advancement folks may be perfectly capable and motivated of learning how to use tools like tableau but may not have had access to them in smaller shops with limited budgets.

I think finding an "out of the box" data analyst is going to be difficult. What may be a better approach is to post a job description looking for someone with the "unteachables", then put those hires through your own data bootcamp.
The biggest hurdle, in my opinion, is salary; I remember speaking about that at the last CASE /Drive with some individuals from larger schools. I truly believe that if you take a risk and forgo prior experience for a natural curiosity, willingness to learn, strong work ethic, and a sharp mind, then you can take and train those individuals who have not been in the field long enough to feel entitled about a certain salary.
The danger is that you will, most likely, have large turnover after 2-3 years, when those start to realize that they are capable of making double or triple elsewhere. That is where you spend those years making them feel valued by their direct leadership and the institution, while showing them the purpose in their work, so that they care more about the people around them and social impact they produce. Then they might not want to give those things up for the dollars.

My recommendation is to find someone who has the technical chops and train the Advancement Savvy. Speaking as someone who came into Advancement from a technical career (independent programmer and programmer-for-hire) I will say a sharp technical person can get up to speed in Advancement in a matter of months (provided he has good Advancement partners.)
If you are looking for a Senior Data Analytics Consultant, you are going to have to realize you are in a seller’s market. In the Advancement world, we often use the term “data analytics” when we actually mean someone who can get the data into Tableau. True data analytics experts are sought after by Banks, Financial Institutes, investment firms, etc. You are going to have to decide what you have to offer. My suggestion would be: a good (but not great) salary, and more relaxed work and living environment.
If you really do want an actual data analytics guy, and not a Tableau expert, I can put you in contact with someone. Even if you can’t get him, he may know someone else.
Best of luck! Mark

All,
Question for the larger community on experiences others are finding in filing positions of this nature.
We realize were in some ways looking for a magical “Unicorn” to fill this position – someone who is both Advancement savvy AND a numbers crunching person. We’re hard to find and even harder to recruit.
Has anyone found a successful way to accomplish this?
Our HR recruiter has had some good success using LinkedIn but other advertising efforts have been less than fruitful.
So curious what others have found to work / not work.
Thanks,

All,
Does working with and guiding an executive fundraising team as they direct us through a multi-billion capital campaign sound like fun?
Does joining a team of 10 people who love numbers, visuals, models and all generally get geeked about understanding the why behind numbers sound appealing?
Would you like to work working at a leading public research institution with a nationally recognized hospital system, more than 550,000 living alumni, millions of “friends” and a nut for a mascot?
Would living in a metropolitan area of more than a million people while still being minutes from the country suit you?
Is so I have an opportunity of the lifetime for you.
We have posted a Senior Data Analytics Consultant position on my team with applications being accepted through 8/25/19.
If you have any questions please ask, I’m happy to answer them.
If you are interested, or know someone who may be, apply.
