We received a similar email a few days ago from a donor with the exact same language in the email, with a different name (no affiliation to the university). He indicated he has used this vehicle to make gifts through his church -
http://realitysf.com/give/. We are interested in learning more about the operational structure of the program before acceptance.

Bingo. Also worth noting that by accepting contributions from Cocatalyst you accept their terms of service. This is relevant because their privacy policy is swiss-cheesy, and not GDPR-compliant for those who are concerned about such things.
One useful tidbit for sleuthing further:
Cocatalyst is a fiscal sponsored project of Social Good Fund, Incorporated ("SGF"), a 501(c)3 registered organization with the Internal Revenue Service. Tax receipts for donations processed by Cocatalyst will be issued by SGF, Tax Identification Number 46-1323531.

So, this is probably a marketing campaign. They are building awareness by making small gifts. A simple reply would be, “You may use that service if you wish. The University does not vouch for or endorse their service.” Something along those lines. Then, sit back and wait for your check from cocatalyst. I bet that, instead, you get another email asking you to install their Jumpstart Button.—Bill

We were contacted by email from someone who was wanting us to do the same thing. His first name was John. I’m wondering if it is the same person.
Below is the email we received. Is this the same message you received?
“I wanted to make a gift of stock from my appreciated gains in my investment portfolio to the scholarship fund for students. I generally use Cocatalyst.org for my donations. Do you support that? I saw there was likely the standard DTC approach, but that takes a lot of work and I haven't worked (or heard) of the current broker before.”

I've seen this pop up a few places. There are a couple of charities that are using the service, eg
https://www.radiancesf.org/give and
https://www.calcpa.org/
May be worth reaching out to them about the service. You can also look into the CEO

Interesting because we did as well – someone with no connection, that we can find to our institution reached out to us inquiring if we would consider using this service because he wanted to give a gift of stock.
Lots of links in his emails inviting me to click further. I agree the website looks quite basic and I was a bit skeptical then and even more now that this is something happening to others.
I forwarded it to our administrative process office to see if they are interested. I would also be interested to know if anyone else has had this sort of thing happen or has worked with this company prior.

Has anyone ever heard of Cocatalyst.org<https://linkprotect.cudasvc.com/url?a=https%3a%2f%2fCocatalyst.org&c=E,1,DZHg1gIIlEdP-rYUTdXEM1svhN4s6a3yk7joH0sjrwbnRo7x3nGSegRJHDeN7LEiwhz1mIaPrU0MN-uPJl062n4iZgTBCUlvV2dABkR3kZyb6qaZzw,,&typo=1> for processing stock gifts? We have an individual reaching out to our team about making a gift of stock through this company. We have no relationship to this individual, and the website of this company looks basic, with no contact information (just a chat box), and it’s run out of an internet café. At a previous institution, we had a similar situation, but the DO was able to get enough personally identifiable information for us to research to determine that it was not legitimate (he had been arrested for scams numerous times previously).
Has anyone ever heard of this company? Worked with them? If you have, that might lend credibility that right now I’m extremely cautious of. Thanks! – Kristen
