We are currently in discussion about membership programs at our
institution, and whether we can / want to transition some of them out of
the membership model to a supporter model (ie general giving, but
designated to a specific program).
Some of our current membership programs which don't include any benefit of
value (ie no admission discounts or free items) seem like a no-brainer to
move to "supporters" (easier to manage, etc.)
However, for one of our current membership programs which has the benefit
of a free ticket to a limited number of events, is there a reason we can't
move this membership model to a supporter model, as long as we're taking
into consideration and reducing the charitable portion of the gift by the
value of the benefits? Ie, is there something in the definition that
triggers when we have to consider something a membership program vs a
designated donation?
As always, thanks!
