  • 1.  How do you define a "New" gift/"New" donor

For my money (well, if I was giving), a new donor is someone who has never given before. A lapsed donor is just that - a donor who lapsed and returned to the flock. Network For Good has an additional phrase - former donors. Lapsed includes folk who haven't given in the last three years. Former donors haven't given in 4+ years. Annual giving teams have these terms down pat and break lapsed donors down into LYBUNTs and SYBUNTs. John John H. Taylor Principal, John H. I just realized I didn't answer your second question. Those returning donors really aren't making "new" gifts - they are simply REnewing. I do not recall seeing anyone calling gifts coming in from lapsed or former donors as being new gifts. All gifts received this year are just "current." There is no new or old. BTW, here are several articles on lapsed donors you might find useful: http://www.thefundraisingauthority.com/donor-cultivation/reactivate-lapsed-donors/ https://www.networkforgood.com/nonprofitblog/how-write-fundraising-letter-wins-back-lapsed-donors/ https://fundraisingreportcard.com/help/lapsed/ https://bloomerang.co/blog/we-want-you-back-a-simple-strategy-for-reactivating-lapsed-donors John H. Do you consider a donor a new donor if they have never given or if they have lapsed for more than a certain period? If the later, how long must the lapse be to consider their giving "new?" Thanks all! Institutions do it differently based on the purposes for the category. For example, 'new' donors might receive certain weclome series communications and introductory offers. If a donor has been stale for a long time, it might make sense to enroll them as new so that they go through those flows.
