  • 1.  Recurring Gift from a DAF?

    Posted 07-22-2019 01:16 PM
Hi hive mind - a gift officer just brought up an interesting question that I don't know the answer to. Can a donor set up a recurring gift through their DAF? My instinct is no, because the DAF reserves the right to deny any recommendation at any time. I'm not asking about whether we could enter it as a recurring gift; I'm just interested if it is something DAFs would allow. Thanks! I think you are asking the wrong hive - and the donor is, too :-). Some DAFs may give greater flexibility to donors than others in the approval process - but to your point, it is not their money. Therefore, only the DAF could authorize the recurring drafting of their checking account. So your donor really needs to ask this question of their DAF. John John H. Taylor Principal, John H. Hello, Anne! I don't know if it's true of all organizations that house DAFs but some of them do allow the individual to start a recurring/scheduled grant. Yes, Fidelity, the largest of the DAF providers, does allow what they call "recurring gift recommendations." Legally speaking, this isn't binding on Fidelity, but as a practical matter it is the same as a recurring gift. In terms of entering it as a recurring gift, I don't think the fact that it's not legally binding is a problem, since neither are other non-pledge-based recurring gifts. If I sign up to a $20/mo recurring gift, I can cancel at any time without penalty, so my next month's gift is a gift intention, not a pledge, since there's nothing enforceable or irrevocable. That seems to be identical to the DAF recurring gift situation. Isaac Shalev CRM Expert www.sage70.com
