  • 1.  Grant requests for donor names

Good Morning, I am curious how others have elected to respond to prospective grant funders when they request the names and amounts of other donors to a specific program? I've had three requests in less than two weeks where the donor name and amount (no address or other biographical information) has been asked. I am, of course, reviewing our privacy statement, but I would be interested in how others who have received this request have elected to proceed. Thank you for sharing how you would respond. When this has come up in the past, it's mostly been foundations and other kinds of institutional funders who supported the program, and in many cases those gifts were a matter of public record for one reason or another. In any case, reaching out to the lead funders to confirm that you can share this information is a good practice, regardless of privacy policy. Funders are usually pretty interested in attracting other sources of funding to their projects -- and if another major funder is considering coming aboard, it might be sensible to start establishing direct relationships and ensuring a shared vision for the project. On the other hand, if this is a smaller gift, and the question is simply part of the compliance process for the prospective funder, I'd look to the privacy policy and respond accordingly.
