  • 1.  pledge pay down

    Posted 06-19-2019 10:03 AM
Good morning, We have a donor that signed a gift agreement for $25,000. With his annual gift, he will apply for a match through his company. Is it inappropriate to reduce the pledge amount by the match amount? If the donor is never intending to pay the amount of the pledge to be satisfied by matching gifts, the pledge agreement should be recast and rerecorded for only the amount of the personal commitment. Thank you John. How would you handle this situation with an AVC that says the donor has documented in writing (not in the agreement) that he (the donor) is solely responsible for the pledge even if his employment changes? I understand the operational side of it but can see her perspective on being "donor centric." Then you can "book" the entire pledge since the donor is assuming personal responsibility. But if a third-party payment comes in you cannot apply it as a payment on the pledge since they (probably) did not say that's what it was for. Then you need to manually reduce the pledge (as you would with a DAF). John John H. Taylor Principal, John H. John, Yes, that is what I meant to manually reduce the pledge balance but not make the match a payment on the pledge. Thank you for your continued guidance on all of these issues.
