Well, donors are not actually purchasing anything. Rather, they are being given recognition based on amounts contributed. In theory, when third-party payments are involved in reaching a recognition threshold - and that includes gifts from DAFs and family foundations - part of the naming recognition belongs to them. Therefore, my policies always state that naming recognition will be granted in such cases after the third-parties confirm their agreement for *their* gifts to be used in this manner. John John H. The legal parameters pertain to tangible benefits (quid pro quo). Many third parties (DAFs and private foundations, e.g.) cannot receive any other than token items. Others must have payments received reflecting the benefit. Naming, however, does not constitute a benefit of this nature. I searched the archives unsuccessfully for a similar question. Can a naming opportunity be purchased by a donor using, in part, matching corporate funds? Thank you for the correction. I wasn’t sure if there was an IRS ruling pertaining to third parties funds being used in any manner. I do understand that there needs to be agreement between all parties. Thanks again John.
