Hi Lesley,
I did my master's thesis on propensity to give amongst several independent variables of undergraduate alumni, some of which were clubs and sports they participated in while students.
I found a direct and positive correlation between undergraduate alumni giving and participation in clubs and sports. Additionally, I found a direct association between those who participated in multiple clubs and sports and increased giving which was very insightful.
So I would be inclined to believe that not only is this information very important to have, but that if it showed a propensity to give, it likely also suggests stronger engagement with their alma mater.
Best,
Eric

My first notion in response is that you need to address the root issue here - the fact that you "don't have complete access to this data." You should. No, you must. Now, if this is a problem of the student groups not recording participation data in the student system, that is a more significant institutional data governance issue. But if you cannot access the data because someone won't let you - that is not something you should tolerate.
The above aside - use of these data does not influence alumni engagement scoring metrics primarily because the alumni do not participate in these activities as alumni - only as students. These data, therefore, are most useful in solicitation and segmentation efforts. But not in calculating alumni engagement scores. Those should be based strictly on participation in events and activities post-graduation. That would include attendance at fundraising events, reunions, and regional and local events generally available to the entire alumni population.

All,
Can you share instances of schools successfully using an alum's student activity data (varsity and intramural sports, clubs, fraternities, sororities, etc.) in alumni engagement?
We often don't have complete access to this data and we want to determine if it is worth it to try to get it. This will help us make the case to gatekeepers.
Thanks in advance!
