Hi all, I had zero exposure to even the concept of charitable solicitation registrations before coming to my current institution a few years ago and my new-ish VP apparently has not either (and she's been in the industry for decades). I think this might be because it's common for them to be handled out of the Finance office, since there's a lot of IRS filings and reporting involved...So no one in Development talks about it. Especially for those of you who do outsource, what office/department manages the process? Whose budget supports the cost of that outsourcing? I advocate for this role being assigned to Advancement Services as we generally have become the "Compliance Office" for most things charitable in nature. This is what we did at NC State and where most of my clients assign responsibility. Funding for the effort comes from the organization itself. While under the auspices of AS it must be separately funded and not seen as "business as usual" and absorbed in the current budget. This is not an inexpensive proposition. John John H. Thanks, John. Could you clarify what you mean by "it must be separately funded and not seen as 'business as usual' and absorbed in the current budget"? Pretty much what I started - if assigned to advancement services to execute, the responsibility and function must come with ”new” money to support the new costs. You cannot take this on without funding (easily $4-8k/year).
