  • 1.  December grads - "class of"?

    Posted 05-17-2019 02:39 PM
Hi Jill, For December Grads, we set their Graduation Year to the calendar year of graduation and default their Preferred Class Year to the same. However, if they walk in May, we change their Preferred Class Yr to accordingly. (We only have one Graduation ceremony per year.) This way when we're planning class events they are included with the class they want to be included with. And when we need to run reports based on actual graduation years, we can. Have a great weekend, Peggy. Happy Friday all! Wondering how your institutions record the class years for students who graduate in December. For example, are those who graduated in December 2018 included in "class of '18" or "class of '19" communications, solicitations, lists, etc. We use class years so frequently, for many purposes, it seems like the kind of thing that should have a clear answer. Is there a recognized best practice in the Advancement Services field? Or a good source you know of that might have a rationale? One of our faculty members suggested the National Center for Education Statistics’ Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS). Anyone have thoughts on that? Thanks, and have a lovely weekend. *Jill Doub* Advancement Services Coordinator Warren Wilson College CPO 6376 PO Box 9000 Asheville, NC 28815 828.771.2052

The "best practice" I have observed is where the graduates are asked which class year they prefer to identify with. The default is normally the class graduating the following Spring with the December graduates typically graduating with them, but earlier. However, there is a shift somewhat to kids taking longer to graduate so I am not sure what you are seeing at Warren Wilson. John John H. Taylor Principal, John H.
