Recently, I've been looking at our school's history with the number of donors in different gift bands, and I've noticed that the bottom of our donor pyramid has been eroding. We've maintained a solid pyramid peak over the years, but smaller gifts (less than $500) have been decreasing. After presenting this information to my VP, he asked me to create percentage goals for each gift band in the pyramid.
My question to the group is whether or not there are standards for the ratios of different gift bands to others? Should the donors who give less than $500 annually make up 50% or 75% of your total donor population, while the peak of $10,000+ makes up 5%?
I recognize that this is tricky because the definition of a "major gift" is different depending on the organization. But if you have goals at your organization that you have set up, or if there are industry standards to follow, I'd love to learn about them.
Thank you,
