  • 1.  End of the campaign pledges?

    Posted 05-09-2019 09:46 AM
We are 95% to our campaign goal and hope to wrap it up by Dec 2019 at the latest. I vaguely recall reading somewhere about pledge schedules and what counts in a campaign. We have a donor who signed a pledge agreement this month, but the schedule would have the first payment in December 2020, a year after the campaign is over. Can/should we count this pledge as part of the current campaign? It was raised during the campaign. - - Beth Johnson Senior Director, Advancement Services Saint Mary's College of California 925-631-4505

Per CASE, as long as the pledge is made during the campaign you may count it - but only if it is to be paid in five years. Whether to count pledges of a greater length must be already addressed in your internal campaign counting policy. CASE does admonish us to take care with inflating campaign totals with a significant number of "last minute" pledges. I am not suggesting you are doing that here - only mentioning that CASE rose very specific concerns about this when issuing the current guidelines. John John H. Taylor Principal, John H. We had a similar agreement in place during a campaign that concluded two years ago. We are currently accepting the final payments on those pledges. We are at the beginning of the campaign, and worked with our board to update our Gift Acceptance Policy to reflect that pledges committed at the end of the campaign that will be paid off after the campaign will still count for the campaign. It may also be worth mentioning that traditionally, when talking about campaigns, there is an active solicitation phase, when gifts and pledges are solicited and commitments are made, and then a pay-out period, which extends typically 5 years after the end of the active campaign period. The campaign celebration typically occurs at the end of the active campaign period, when all the campaign commitments have been made. So, at least using the traditional terminology, the payments would still be made during the campaign, just not during the active solicitation phase. (The active campaign period, in turn, is often viewed as having a leadership/quiet phase, during which key insiders are solicited, with the goal of receiving commitments for a significant portion of the ultimate campaign goal, and a public phase, typically after a campaign kick-off event, during which the remainder of the commitments are solicited from a wider audience.) My US$0.02 worth; the usual disclaimers apply. Good luck! Alan Alan S. Hejnal Data Quality Manager Smithsonian Institution - Office of Advancement 600 Maryland Avenue SW, Suite 600E P.O.
