Circle your wagons and come to an agreement - all of you - as to the proper permanent handling of the fund. Then seek relief from the State Attorney General requesting approval of an institutional endowment agreement using donor correspondence as backup. If you all cannot come to a unanimous agreement on donor intent, then I would propose the permanent agreement stipulate to awarding a cash prize and a none-cash prize in alternate (even/odd) years. Hello all, Have a question for the group: we have an award that was established in 1929 through correspondence and does not have formal "the terms of the award are x" documentation. Reading through the correspondence chronologically, we're able to deduce that the donor wanted to establish an annual prize (not monetary) award for students who writing poems, essays, or stories for newspaper (the donor's industry) for print, versus for publication. Presently, the award is being used by the English Department as a cash prize for a creative writing student, and our office is concerned that this may actually not be honoring the donor's intent. An alternative (and perhaps more accurate) interpretation would be to award a non-cash prize to a student who currently writes for the student newspaper. There are two conflicting memos in the file (from college administrators) from the 1970s and 1980s offering re-interpretations of the original correspondence but no donor-approved addenda/addendums exist. There are no living heirs/points of contact. What is best practices to perhaps "correct" what may have veered off-course? Any input is greatly appreciated.
