A non-profit organization is giving us a donation of $5,000 but they said they need for us to give something to them. I am questioning all of this. We are a non-profit listener-supported Catholic Radio Station. I am a consultant to them and this just doesn't sound right. Need others opinion. This greatly depends on what the "something" is, Diane. If they are asking you for free advertising that would negate the gift (if beyond name mentions on the air). It is very difficult to respond to the inquiry without knowing what the nonprofit organization is requesting in return. John John H. Taylor Principal, John H. They want us to make a donation to them as they said they have to have money coming in for them to give money out. But it does not seem to be right for us to accept 5,000 but they want us to turn around and give them a cash donation. Nope - not only is that not a voluntary gift but it is an exchange transaction. And this feels smarmy at best. I wouldn't have anything to do with that organization - not in this instance nor in practice. John John H. Taylor Principal, John H. That is quid pro quo – they will not be able to call it a charitable gift. --Marianne ________________________________________ Marianne M.
