While I would use "Unidentified Donor" to distinguish from donors who wish to remain anonymous, I would follow the same protocol. No receipt, per se, is necessary. But a thoughtful stewardship letter sent to the elementary school addressed to, "The Children of XYZ Elementary School," will go a long way in fostering good will. John John H. Hello, We received a gift from an elementary school collection jar from students. The check is from the school district who must have collected the children's' donations - should this be credited to an anonymous donor, or to the address of the school district on the check? I think if the money went to the school district and then the district issued the check they would be receipted, but I am not really sure. Any guidance appreciated! Sarah

Sarah - In an instance such as this (i.e. when the "donor" is simply an organization serving as a pass-through entity), I'd be inclined to credit the gift to an Anonymous Donor record.
