Good Morning, We have a guest speaker that the university is paying $1,000 to speak. She would like to donate that $1,000 to us. Is it correct to say that she would need to accept the $1,000 and then write us a check from herself for this to actually be a gift? Thanks Liz -- Liz Arizpe Director of Advancement Services Valparaiso University Advancement 1100 Campus Drive South Valparaiso, IN 46383 (Phone) 219-464-5610 *The information contained in this communication is confidential and is intended only for use by the addressee(s). Essentially, yes. You will find some business offices that are willing to take a shortcut and not issue the check and simply transfer the funds - provided they still issue a 1099 to the speaker.
