Rose, sounds like a definite hard credit to XYZ Co. if the check is from them. I wouldn’t soft credit the customer, but I would send them a thank you letter (directly if you have their contact info, or c/o XYZ Co. if you don’t) so they at least get some type of thanks for helping direct the funds and for being a fan of your organization.
Just my 2c,

Subject: [FUNDSVCS] Loyalty programs
Hey all! Just hoping you will confirm my thinking – I looked in the archives under “loyalty program” but not a lot came up (and not what I was looking for).
We got a check from XYZ Co (a commercial mortgage company). To thank their borrowers, they donate to charities of their borrowers’ choice.
This is still a hard credit from XYZ Co, and a tribute (IHO) for their customer, right? I don’t think I would soft credit the customer, or should I? XYZ Co. said in their letter to send a tax receipt to the customer. I would have called them on this, but it’s a gift from last year that I just stumbled on while reviewing a mailing list.
Thanks!
Rose
